A key to being a successful student at UCLA is to utilize the plethora of resources that are made available to you. We know as a commuter you are managing many different responsibilities throughout your day, including commuting through LA traffic to get to campus. Whether it is wondering how to contact your academic counselor, struggling to figure out the parking pass deadlines, or just wanting to be more involved on campus, we will give you the tools you need to help you succeed on campus even when you are not physically living on the UCLA campus.​

Local Resources for Community Members Affected by the Fires in Los Angeles County

Bruins, we hope you and your loved ones are safe. For the most up to date information about the status of the UCLA campus please utilize the Bruin Safe Online website. Below you will find a list of local resources for those affected by the fires and evacuations. This is not an exhaustive list, so we encourage you to stay connected with local, state, and federal agencies for additional resources as they become available. 

UCLA Campus Resources

  • Bruin Safe Online - The Bruin Safe Online website can be used to check the current operational status of campus along with the most recent campus updates. Information about BruinALERT (UCLA's public alert & warning system) and the Bruins Safe app can also be found at this website. 
  • Be Well Bruin - The Be Well Bruin website is a comprehensive guide of UCLA resources. The website has categorized resources to simplify the search process. 
  • UCLA Economic Crisis Response Team -  The Economic Crisis Response Team (ECRT) is a multidisciplinary group of campus partners dedicated to supporting UCLA students experiencing a financial crisis that impacts their well being and academic success at UCLA. They can provide enrolled UCLA students, in crisis, support with emergency short term loans, emergency grant and basic needs grants, emergency meals, emergency housing, case management support with navigating other campus resources. 
  • Financial Aid: If a family’s ability to contribute towards the educational costs of their student has been impacted, students can contact the Financial Aid Message Center or call Financial Aid and Scholarships at 310-206-0400.
  • Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS):CAPS will serve as a crisis line (310-825-0768) 24 hours a day for students in need of support due to fires.
  • Academic Support: Students are encouraged to write to their faculty to share details about what has transpired and request support. Students may contact the Dean-on-Call at 310-825-3871 or at dean@saonet.ucla.edu for support in contacting faculty.
  • Office of the Dean of Students: If students have additional questions or require resources not listed above, they may contact the Office of the Dean of Students at (310) 825-3871 or dean@saonet.ucla.edu.

Local Resources

  • Los Angeles County Information: The Los Angeles County website has a comprehensive list of resources including information about evacuations, shelters (for both persons and animals), water alerts, impacted services, road closures, and more. 
  • Los Angeles City Emergency Information: The Los Angeles City website is home to an additional comprehensive list of resources specific to the City of Los Angeles and the broader affected areas.
  • Los Angeles Fire Department Alerts: The Los Angeles Fire Department is sharing updates about the fires and evacuations. 

Transportation Resources 

We are doing our best to keep these resources as up to date as possible. These resources may be changing in availability, we urge you to follow up with the individual services to confirm. 

  • Lyft: Riders in need can use the code CAFIRERELIEF25, valid for 2 rides up to $25 each ($50 total) for 500 riders from now until 1/15 at 11:59 p.m.
  • Uber: Use promo code WILFIRE25 in the wallet section of your Uber app to redeem a free Uber ride up to $40.
  • Airbnb: Airbnb, partnership with 211 LA, is offering free temporary housing for residents displaced or forced to evacuate due to the recent wildfires. Submit your information in this form to receive notifications on availability. Please note, spaces are limited, and completing the form does not guarantee a stay. Eligibility criteria apply.
  • Metro: Fare collection for rides on Metro has been suspended systemwide.

Some of the academic resources available to you include academic counseling, writing centers, tutoring services, and digital library resources. Explore the different support services to help you achieve your academic goals.

Transportation

There are a variety of different commuting resources available from discounted bus passes, late-night vanpools, parking passes, and more. Commuting to UCLA may not always be easy, but you have access to many resources to help you manage being a Bruin commuter student. UCLA Transportation is your hub for all your transportation questions and concerns. They provide student parking permits, vanpools, carpools, bike routes, discounted bus passes, and more.

Getting Involved

Getting involved on campus is important to build your UCLA community and create a sense of belonging on campus. This is especially true for student commuters who may feel more isolated due to the demands of their commuting schedules. UCLA has over 1,000 different student organizations! Reach out to the student organizations you are interested in to find out about their meeting schedules so you can start creating your Bruin community.
